Applied Myoskeletal Therapy and PASC TMJ Therapy:

quick, versatile, and very effective

  • What is Applied Myoskeletal Therapy?

“Applied Myoskeletal Therapy (AMT) is a gentle and effective therapy suitable for all ages. It is said that with the right key the door will open easily, and this is the philosophy of Applied Myoskeletal Therapy, believing that the therapist should work with the body, promoting it to heal, instead of forcefully trying to make a change and risk putting the body into stress.” - John Garfield, creator.

It is a blend of techniques from different soft-tissue therapies including Bowen Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Osteopathic principals, and Massage Therapy to name a few. Applied Myoskeletal Soft-Tissue Therapy (AMT), is a gentle, relaxing, non-oil, soft-tissue therapy. It primarily used for the assessment, treatment, and management of soft tissue injury, pain, and dysfunction of the neuro-musculoskeletal system. It contains transverse soft- tissue movements, along with a wide variety of muscle releases involving various sustained holds. AMT represents the development of more than fifteen years research and clinical experience and incorporates many safe and gentle methods that are not taught elsewhere. Designed as a postgraduate course, AMT is a valuable complement to all types of therapies including Bowen Therapy, Remedial Massage and its variations, Kinesiology, Craniosacral Therapy, Positional Release Technique, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, and Physiotherapy, without undermining the principles of the modality.

It works by assessing an imbalance in the dural tube, spine, or soft tissues of the body, and allow the body to regain a balanced alignment without using any forceful pressures on the body. Akin to having braces pulling on the teeth to create a shift, removing the pull of those wires would allow the teeth to remain in their original position. When you have constant fascial or muscular tension it has the ability to pull joints and the spine out of alignment too. Decrease the tension = decrease the postural imbalance.

Another key aspect of AMT is the sacrum to skull relationship- similar to craniosacral therapy. If the bottom of the spine is improperly positioned it can affect the position and function of a ‘paired’ bone in the neck or skull, and therefore impede the function of that area, and the whole dural tube between it. This is based on the Lovett Brother Principle: when one bone of the pair is not moving properly it will result in its partner becoming dysfunctional as well.

  • PASC TMJ Corrections with Cranial Considerations

PASC stands for Practitioner Assessment Skills Course- which is an advanced therapy that combines the principles of Orthodontics, Craniosacral therapy, Acupressure & Meridians, and functional anatomy, with the treatment styles of Bowen Therapy and Applied Kinesiology.

Did you know that non-specific low back pain often comes from the Jaw? Every vertebrae in the spine has a partner that moves in relation to it. Think you’re walking across a series of mats laid across a pond- when you step on one end the other end moves as well. When you get stressed out and clench your teeth, it impedes movement in the jaw and then the corresponding vertebrae which is L5, the lowest level of the spine above the pelvis.

PASC was developed by Ron Phelan in conjunction with Brendan C. Stack, The Father of TMJ Treatment . The principles of this course are to address the position of the mandible (the lower jaw) in relation to the upper jaw (the maxilla). Only when the mandible is sitting in the correct position- called the Gelb 4-7 position or Centric Relation- can the neck, spine, and pelvis be able to realign itself and function properly. When the mandible is pulled backward towards the skull giving the appearance of an overbite, it compresses important neurological structures as well that can lead to symptoms that mimic Parkinson’s or Tourette syndromes. Alleviating this compression is also key to relieving the compression on the tissue directly behind the TMJ disc and allowing it to heal.

Another important aspect to consider was developed by Dr. Harold Gelb. “His phrase, “If your jaw joint is off, you can kiss your body goodbye!” is well known, for good reason. In his book, Killing Pain Without Prescription, he clearly explains step-by-step what happens to people with misaligned jaws. He states that birth trauma is the #1 cause of malocclusion and the resulting TMD. “You can see it in their faces!” One eye is higher than the other, one eye is smaller, there is a higher ear, higher shoulder, higher pelvis on the same side of the body.” Link here

The simple act of swallowing alone activates the TMJ ~2500x per DAY. Now imagine having a tongue tie or improper swallow pattern- you will also have a pelvic mobility sfunction.

Have you ever been told you have one leg ‘shorter’ than the other? Does it keep coming back?

If the pelvis is crooked, the spine is crooked- think like the game of Jenga- each vertebrae must counter balance to make up for the misalignment of the ones below.

An AMT sessions consist of balancing the pelvis to correct a lateral pelvic tilt, any rotations forward or backwards in the hip joints, then correcting a sideways rotation in the sacrum. Once these are straight (or straighter in this case) the therapist works to alleviate any secondary tensions in the body that could encourage the problems to return.
